Marketing Brekky August 2012

Marketing Brekky

Every month I run the 'Marketing Breakfast Club' which includes a beautiful bunch of very smart marketing professionals brought together by a fine breakfast spread at the Merchant on Beaufort St in Mount Lawley. The breakfast started as a way of bringing together interesting people offering a forum to bounce ideas off each other and discuss the wonderful world of marketing.

AUGUST 2011
This month we discussed advances in marketing and how important it is to measure and analyse the effectiveness of your marketing…

Some of the ideas:

  • One member discussed how advertising an online training program in a newspaper made no sense and brought no business.
  • Another mentioned how their business which does not want to attract the domestic market is sinking money into the Yellow Pages.
  • Another discussed the ‘ideas’ of other staff within the organisation about what should be done with the marketing spend and how important the role is of the marketing manager to analyse these ‘ideas’ and ensure they are fruitful for the company.
  • How being a marketing manager is being an educator and someone who brings about change in an organisation, especially where directors are quite traditional in their ways of thinking about marketing the business.
  • The Yellow Pages is dying- or pretty much dead and how it is surprising that large industrial businesses think nothing of putting $40,000 into this medium with no results but baulk at spending over $5K in the web.
  • Exa Perth is specifically looking to gain momentum in the Perth market and is undergoing a range of initiatives.
  • Next week Exa Perth will be filmed by Curtin University as a feature showing where graduates in marketing and PR can end up and how important and growing the web is for both marketing and PR for business.
  • Exa has just launched a micro site for Exa Perth: www.exaperth.com.au which demonstrates a great example of how a national company can remain relevant to its specific audiences in different cities.
  • Marketing/PR ideas: getting free press, being newsworthy, sponsoring a sporting team, social media, viral marketing (e.g. discussed video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpW1dv6rTgk), how video assists with Google rankings- You Tube is owned by Google.
  • Discussed the creativity of Perth marketing agency Meerkats: http://www.meerkats.com.au/

Well, that's it for this month and I'm looking forward to the next Marketing Breakfast Club.
