AGENDA

High-tech firm Miraisens showcases ‘touchable’ 3D technology TECHNOLOGY that generates touchable 3D imagery has been unveiled in Japan, with its developers saying users could pull and push objects that are not really there.

Know-how that could improve a gaming experience, or allow someone to physically shape objects that exist only on a computer, will soon be available to buy, said Miraisens, a high-tech firm based outside Tokyo.

Leap Motion

Leap Motion presents an entirely new way to interact with your computers. Put simply, Leap Motion is more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard and more sensitive than a touchscreen. For the first time, you can control a computer in three dimensions with your natural hand and finger movements. It’s not your typical motion sensor, as Leap Motion allows you to scroll the web page, zoom in the map and photos, sign documents and even play a first person shooter game with only hand and finger movements. The smooth reaction is the most crucial key point here.

Baidu Eye, China's Version of Google Glass
Unlike Glass, Baidu Eye has no screen or any optical display. Instead, the device looks like a wraparound headset that rests on top of a user's ears. There is an earpiece on its left arm and a camera on its right arm that takes photos, recognizes objects and analyzes information in its surroundings, according to the company.

Baidu Eye sends information to a user's mobile device (smartphone or tablet) via an app. In an apparent jab at Google, the company said this method makes it "easier to browse than on a small, mounted screen" and aims to "consume less energy so the battery lasts much longer."

· Along with a larger screen, both models of the iPhone 6 are expected to adopt design elements from the iPad and the iPod touch.

· Alleged iPhone 6 schematics and part leaks have suggested the iPhone 6 will be considerably thinner than the current iPhone 5s, which is 7.6 mm. The final version of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is said to be 6.9 mm thick, 138 mm long, and 66 mm wide. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is said to be 7.1 mm thick, 158 mm long, and 78 mm wide.

· The phones will also include rounded iPad-style corners, pill-shaped volume buttons, thick antenna bands, a rounded True Tone dual-LED flash, an embedded Apple logo, and a power button located on the right side of the device.

How to be a Killer Marketer in the Digital Era Earlier this year, during the 2014 Super Bowl, a series of sloppy, nearly incoherent tweets about the game started appearing from the official Twitter account of well-known retail chain JC Penney. They included messages like, “Toughdown Seadawks!! Is sSeattle going toa runaway wit h this???” and “Who kkmew theis was ghiong tob e a baweball ghamle.#lowsscorinh 5_0.”

The tweets quickly went viral, getting retweeted in the tens of thousands and generating a lot of speculation around a possible hacking or out-of-control, drunken employees on the job. But then, about an hour after the first tweet, JCPenney revealed that the messages were in fact part of an entirely intentional campaign to promote a line of special edition mittens:

Meanwhile, other major consumer brands had already found a way to cleverly inject themselves into the drama, responding to JCPenney’s tweets with responses, like:

Despite some criticism, the whole thing was a significant PR win for all ‘teams’ involved, especially when you consider how notoriously expensive and competitive advertising is at an event like the Super Bowl. (A 30-second TV commercial aired during the popular event costs.) Finding ways to leverage alternate channels like Twitter, JC Penney (and Kia, Doritos and Coors Light) got tens of thousands of extra eyes on their brands for a fraction of a fraction of the price. In fact, it turns out JC Penney was the second-most mentioned brand on social media at the Super Bowl, with an impressive 120,334 mentions.

Tips:

·         Invest in social channels.

·         Leverage your social channels

·         See every comment on social media as a golden opportunity

·         Get your whole company on social media

Facebook Announces Business Manager
Marketers and managers, heads up. Facebook has just announced Business Manager, a new online tool which aims to help professionals – in-house marketers and agencies alike – to run multiple business pages and ads. The idea is to have everything in one spot – all accounts, businesses and people involved. Managers can add and delete accounts linked to their companies and see everything that’s going on in the one place, eliminating the need to switch between multiple accounts and log-ins. Business Manager also allows better control of human resources, with the ability to add and remove people involved with the accounts, change their roles or edit their access.

Google Deliberately Showing You Lousy Old Versions to Force You to Update your Browser
Google has been accused of intentionally displaying old versions of its site in order to convince web users to install the latest browser software

The BBC reports that users took to Google’s online support forum to complain about seeing outdated versions of the site. Google said this “isn’t a bug” and in fact “working as intended.”

One user posted screenshots that show Google displaying an old version of the site from 2013 because his web browser hadn’t been upgraded to the latest version.

Google Pigeon – The Latest Algorithm Update

The Pigeon update was rolled out on July 24, 2014 for results in US English. It has been cited as one of the biggest local search algorithm updates in recent years and there has been significant reaction from webmasters around the details.

Effects so far:

1.       Local Listing Packs:  a significant reduction in the number of queries which include a local listing pack on search engine results pages (SERPs).

2.       Website Authority: Traditional ranking factors have apparently been brought back in a major way, so that local rankings will now be more dependent on backlinks, website authority, and other SEO ranking signals.

3.       Local Directories: A significant boost has been noticed in the rankings of local directories, particularly of Yelp.

4.       Local Carousel: No changes have been noticed in the performance of local carousel results, and thus, they can be used just as before to gain exposure for certain local keywords.

HTTPS as a ranking signal At Google I/O a few months ago, we called for “HTTPS everywhere” on the web.

We’ve also seen more and more webmasters adopting HTTPS (also known as HTTP over TLS, or Transport Layer Security), on their website, which is encouraging.

For these reasons, over the past few months we’ve been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We've seen positive results, so we're starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it's only a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content — while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS. But over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we’d like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web.

Google catches sex offender with Gmail scan, but raises privacy concerns It's common knowledge that Google scans your Gmail content to better target you with ads. But when the company recently turned over a Gmail user to authorities for possessing child pornography, it also shined a spotlight on the question of how much privacy you can have on the service.

John Henry Skillern, 41, has been charged with possessing child pornography after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip from Google that he had three pornographic images of children in his email.

In one case last year, an Arizona couple sued Walmart for mistaking bath time photos of their kids as child porn.

It's unknown exactly how Google was able to recognise Skillern's pictures as child porn — but once that connection was made, under US law Google was required to notify the center. It's possible Skillern's account was under higher scrutiny since he is a registered sex offender, but Google has not yet responded to queries.

Wikipedia founder: EU's Right to be Forgotten is 'deeply immoral'   The legislation allows European citizens to request that links to "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant" information be removed from search results. The web pages themselves remain online, but the links from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing disappear. Jimmy Wales said: "History is a human right and one of the worst things that a person can do is attempt to use force to silence another.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, has received multiple notices of intent to remove certain Wikipedia content from European search results, since the EU's Right to be Forgotten legislation came into force in May.
